Principle of Activated Carbon Deodorization
Activated carbon deodorization mainly utilizes the physical adsorption principle of activated carbon. During the process, it relies on air as a medium to adsorb harmful substances in the air, and is therefore defined as a passive air purification material. The oxidation principle mainly utilizes ozone as a strong oxidant. Ozone can react chemically with odorous chemicals, oxidizing and decomposing them into non-toxic and odorless substances, thereby achieving the effect of deodorization. There are many odors that can be removed, including odors mainly composed of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, etc.
The odors that can be removed are:
1. Furniture odor removal: Activated carbon can be used to store newly purchased furniture in cabinets, drawers, and refrigerators;
2. It can also be placed inside shoes to remove odors;
3. Car odor removal: New cars generally contain a lot of harmful substances, such as unpleasant and pungent odors, which can be effectively removed with activated carbon.
These two methods rely on adsorption and strong oxidation.
It is not practical to use activated carbon to alleviate the odors of refrigerators and shoes by solving indoor paint odors, furniture odors, and formaldehyde. It only has some optional auxiliary treatment effects.
Ozone can solve many odors and has a 75% decomposition ability for indoor free formaldehyde, but it needs to be used for a long time. It is also an indicator in TVOC. When using ozone, it is important to ensure that there is no one indoors and to protect furniture and appliances that are prone to oxidation.
Activated carbon has many pores, relying on these pores to adsorb odors (which are also particles)
Ozone is an oxidant that oxidizes odors
The adsorption principle of activated carbon can be divided into physical adsorption and chemical adsorption
1、 Physical adsorption mainly occurs during the removal of impurities in liquid and gas phases by activated carbon The porous structure of activated carbon provides a large surface area, making it very easy to achieve the purpose of absorbing and collecting impurities Just like magnetism, all molecules have mutual attraction Because of this, a large number of molecules on the pore walls of activated carbon can generate strong attraction, thereby achieving the goal of attracting impurities from the medium into the pore size It must be pointed out that the molecular diameter of these adsorbed impurities must be smaller than the pore size of activated carbon in order to ensure that the impurities are absorbed into the pore size That's why we create activated carbon with different pore structures by constantly changing raw materials and activation conditions, making it suitable for various impurity absorption applications
2、 Besides physical adsorption, chemical reactions also frequently occur on the surface of activated carbon Activated carbon not only contains carbon, but also has a small amount of chemically bound oxygen and hydrogen in functional group forms on its surface, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, phenols, lipids, quinones, ethers, etc These surface oxides or complexes can undergo chemical reactions with the adsorbed substances, thereby binding and accumulating on the surface of activated carbon The adsorption of activated carbon is the result of the combined action of the two types of adsorption mentioned above When the adsorption rate and desorption rate of activated carbon in solution are equal, that is, the amount of activated carbon adsorbed per unit time is equal to the amount of desorption, the concentration of the adsorbed substance in the solution and on the surface of the activated carbon no longer change, and equilibrium is reached. At this point, the dynamic equilibrium is called activated carbon adsorption equilibrium, and the concentration of the adsorbed substance in the solution is called equilibrium concentration.
